Kenya Destination Guide September 2010

Feature Of The Month

Baloon Safari at the Taita Hills

The Taita Hills are good ballooning country, and dawn balloon safaris are available over the sanctuary. This is a fantastic way to witness the sunrise, and also to spot the elusive game on the forested slopes of the Taita. Take an early morning drift across the hills, and then be back on the ground for breakfast. This region is more remote than the more visited parks and reserves of southern Kenya, the perfect destination looking for anyone looking for an opportunity to get away from it all and relax in the wild. Insider Tip

Kariakor Market

Kariakor Market located just outside town of Nairobi off racecourse Road, is another excellent market for handicrafts, in particular for good and reasonable priced sisal basketwork. This very lively market, named after the Colonial 'Carrier Corps' (Karia-kor) who were once stationed here.
Kariakor is renowned all over town as the best place to sample real traditional Kenyan food. There are many small shops and eateries attached to the market selling a wide range of traditional cuisines. The Market is worth exploring if not for bargains then simply for atmosphere. Travel Media

Kenya is the ‘Land of the Lion King’ and sits at the centre of the African safari experience, with an outstanding variety of wild animals and Big Five opportunities. Although safaris are its greatest attraction, it is a country of great diversity with much more to offer than splendid wildlife. Essentially it is a place for outdoor living - the coast offers beaches and water-based activities, the mountains present a challenge to hikers and climbers, and the rolling savannahs are a game-viewers paradise.

My first safari... and I was not even looking forward to that! What a mistake! I figured big or wild animals would not give me a thrill, but they did: to see them in their natural habitat - going about their lie - was really something special.

Visit local villages to see how they live and meet some of the locals. The people will be thrilled to see you and will probably perform many and varied dances for you. At some point they'll also expect you to join in!
